A visitor from outer space, reading and watching media coverage for the last 2 weeks, would be within reason to believe American civilization was on the brink of disaster.
Our government was shut down. We were close to reaching our debt ceiling and default. Hundreds of thousands of people were furloughed and many government services halted. We heard dire warnings about damage to the American economy and the potential impact of a healthcare law passed 3.5 years ago.
Yet there’s another side to the story. Even before the crisis was resolved in Washington last night, it was reported that the U.S. is now the world’s largest producer of oil and gas. Silicon Valley employment is now near pre-recession peaks. Sales of new cars have soared in recent months.
The fundamentals of our economy are strong and growing. The opportunities for businesses, small and large, are there for the taking.
The media know to always milk a potential crisis for everything it’s worth. The rest of us need to have the same dedicated focus on taking advantage of the opportunities available to us to grow our businesses.
