The media, politicians, and even some Silicon Valley bigwigs are all up in arms about the rapid evolution of artificial intelligence (AI) tools.
The concern is that these tools are evolving so quickly that they are able to take decisive action with serious consequences—without human direction or interference. AI bots have been more successful at both solving extremely complex mathematical problems and hacking into systems without direction from their human handlers.
Should companies like OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Microsoft, and others put the brakes on their AI tools to ensure they don’t outstrip our ability to control them? If we do that, are we giving up our leadership position in this field to China, Russia, or other countries, who may not be driven by the same values we have?
Now Congress and even the United Nations are considering getting involved in the fray. Given the track record of these two institutions, I’m not sure why putting our bets on their actions would be a good strategy.
But even with all the angst about rogue AI tools eventually harming or replacing the human race, I have to ask, are we over-reacting?
This is not the first time in the history of the world that a technology was introduced that had the potential to destroy life as we know it. The Manhattan Project produced a weapon with immense destructive capabilities. We’ve seen various poisons and chemicals from Agent Orange to ricin that are incredibly lethal. Gunpowder and even the automobile were considering life-threatening when first introduced.
Yet, we’re still here. We haven’t eviscerated the planet yet—in spite of the best efforts of madmen to do so.
Perhaps instead of hyperventilating about AI bots turning the tables on their human masters, we should focus on how to harness the power of these tools effectively. This might be our opportunity to end some of the bad things in the world as we know them. And that would feel just fine.
