Tomorrow is the 14th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks–the deadliest terrorist attacks on American soil.
The world has changed dramatically in the last decade and a half. We’ve fought two difficult and costly wars. Our sense of invincibility is gone. We remain vigilant and on alert for potential terrorist attacks around the world. Yet our economy has rebounded, our way of life is secure, and we are not deterred or disabled by the threat of terrorists.
Two news items stand out this week. In Kentucky, a court clerk was jailed for refusing to grant marriage licenses for same-sex couples. In Europe, hundreds of thousands of Syrians escaping the brutal consequences of civil war in their homeland are being offered safety and sanctuary–with just a handful being allowed into the United States.
Post 9/11, we went to battle in the name of freedom. Yet there is still major work to do in this area–in our back yard and across the world. The lesson of 9/11 is not to build a fortress to lock out those who are unlike us, but to embrace and help those who do not yet enjoy the same rights the rest of us often take for granted.
