This week, the New York Knicks beat the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA Finals to capture basketball’s championship crown for the first time in 53 years.
And for the nth time in 47 years, the Islamic Republic of Iran bested its enemy at the negotiating table, this time out negotiating the Trump administration.
While all of New York City went wild with ecstasy as the Knicks came from behind to beat the Spurs in a 4-1 series, there is no celebration among the Iranian people. What started out as a series of US/Israeli military victories has been dissipated by a 14-point memorandum of understanding (MOU) that appears to weight the decision heavily in favor of the Islamic Republic.
Furthermore, the MOU ties the agreement with Iran to actions in Lebanon, emboldening Hezbollah terrorists to continue striking Northern Israel. While details still need to be worked out, it appears Iran will now force ships transiting through the Strait of Hormuz to pay a fee for passage, and the disposition of Iran’s nuclear assets remains unaddressed. Again.
Six months after nearly 40,000 Iranians were killed by the repressive regime, it appears that a new age has still not arrived. The regime has been weakened and the economy devastated. Yet the MOU provides for billions of dollars to flow to Iran that will likely allow the resumption of missile production and supplying terror proxies.
Perhaps there are cracks forming that will shake the regime enough to bring change. Perhaps we will soon see actions that will enable the Iranian people to free themselves from this half-century nightmare and again join the free world.
It may sound improbable, but then again, there aren’t too many people who would have predicted in October that this would be the year the Knicks would break their long championship drought. Let’s hope this week’s actions won’t cause Team Iran to foul out before achieving their long awaited goal.
