Over the last week, Congress has been attempting to grill Dr. Anthony Fauci, the man who spearheaded the US government response to COVID-19.
Fauci took the Fifth Amendment and refused to answer hundreds of questions, resulting in the committee finding him in contempt of Congress. What happens next is still to be determined.
There were certainly mistakes to be made in how the pandemic was. handled, but what is easily forgotten is how many things went RIGHT:
- Vaccines against a brand new pathogen were developed and available in less than a year.
- Treatments for those who contracted the disease were available in a short time frame as well.
- While over a million Americans lost their lives, hundreds of millions of others survived, due to the streamlined government effort to find a cure for the virus (which actually was pushed by the Trump administration).
Meanwhile, while Congress is still debating the details of the COVID response six years later, an epidemic of cyclosporiasis, likely caused by contaminated lettuce, has broken out across much of the country—sickening tens of thousands of people and killing at least two. The CDC used to track outbreaks like this, but as part of recent government efficiency cutbacks, this tracking was eliminated.
In addition, a widespread, coordinated wave of cyberattacks (possibly caused by Iran) has targeted municipal water and wastewater facilities across at least 12 US states. So far, operations have been disrupted, but it appears drinking water has not been contaminated—yet.
The CDC reports over 2300 cases of measles this year alone, with 93% of those cases occurring in individuals who were not vaccinated. Nearly 70% of those cases were in children.
Instead of rehashing what did or didn’t happen six years ago in a pandemic that could have been much, much worse, isn’t it time to focus on the public health issues we’re facing now?
